A European army would reduce the EU's reliance on states such as the US for military assistance.
North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO)
is a poor means of defending Europe.
EU nations depend heavily on U.S assistance for all their military operations.
Becoming less dependent on the US for military assistance will allow the EU to pursue a more independent foreign policy.
There are better ways of reducing reliance on the US.
An EU Army would be wholly unable to counter a major aggressor (such as Russia) without US aid.
