Should the European Union intervene in the political conflict in Catalonia?
Catalonia is a key contributor to the European economy. Europe must act to avoid instability in the region.
If the EU does not intervene and Catalonia becomes independent, it will be able to contribute more to the European budget independently than as part of Spain, as there are fewer dues to be paid to Madrid.
The breakage of legal security by declaring (illegally) independence of a state is the worst case scenario for the European stability. Even a legal agreed declaration of independence will create economic instability during the transition period.
The small size of Catalonia's economy should be an argument against EU intervention.
