Cultural appropriation can disrespect the sacred traditions and items of a group.
Aspects of cultures have significant cultural/spiritual meaning. Using these parts of culture for fashion or play trivializes their importance. Adoption or appreciation would require understanding and use in a way that is in accordance with the culture.

There is nothing inherently sacred about culture. Attempting to claim cultural appropriation does damage is valid, but only in the same way that one can argue that trying to appeal to a wider audience has ruined a piece of media.
