Cultural appropriation is wrong

Perspective
Loading Discussion

Cultural appropriation is a way to integrate a culture into the mainstream.

Pros
Cons
  •

Much of the West's Classic Art has been

informed by Japanese art in the 19th century.

  •

Mathematically, restricting cultural appropriation will result in the death of the minority culture. If culture can only move in one direction (minorities can adopt dominant culture but not vice versa) eventually the minority culture will dwindle and die as it loses adherents but cannot gain any.

  •

Western countries have a diverse population, so integrating numerous cultures into the mainstream culture acts as a way to include as many people as possible.

  •

Not all cultures want to be integrated into the mainstream. Especially when something is intended to be an expression of a counterculture, cultural appropiation can rob the meaning and power of such expression.

  • Except that cultural appropriation tends to go in parallel with people from the dominant class being able to enjoy the cultural item being appropriated while the people from the dominated culture being stigmatized for it.

  •

There are other ways to integrate a culture into the mainstream, such as allowing groups belonging to that culture to represent it themselves.
