Should governments fund liberal arts degrees?
Cutting funding to the liberal arts would hurt the entire university structure.
Government cuts to liberal arts funding would also harm STEM subjects, as many universities
use the revenue
from low-cost arts departments
expensive STEM departments.
At the moment universities are
struggling to meet demand
for STEM courses while keeping classes small. This would become worse if liberal arts degrees were no longer funded by the government.
Cuts in funding for the liberal arts would make it difficult for universities who have given
academics in the liberal arts
tenure to continue to fund them.
If the government were no longer funding liberal arts degrees, this would leave them with significantly more money to fund STEM degrees directly.
