Is the European Union the greatest political peace accomplishment in modern History?
EU takes credit for the accomplishments of NATO.
NATO was first and foremost a mutual assis treaty between England and France in the aftermath of world war two. But grew to include much of Europe and USA. At this size, attacking either country in the union was unthinkable.
Peace between Russia and the Baltic states can be attributed to NATO membership.
on May 9th 1950 (just 1 year after NATO's birth) is considered to mark the beginning of EU, and still is designated as 'Europe Day'. It calls for solidarity and gathering of european nations, promotion of peace, etc.
NATO involves non european states. France even quit the organization for years, and Britain always showed some distance regarding to its forces' chain of command.
History has proven that a treaty isn't worth a lot on peace accomplishment compared to greater scale political entities. The background of
United States constitution
could be some proof of this statement (the 13 states, the money issue, etc.)
NATO's board members refused Soviet Union as a member of this military defensive alliance in 1954 (after Staline's death)
Therefore, it encouraged the
nuclear arms race
that ocurred for 40 years from that date.
