Should the US government guarantee every citizen a job?
Finding appropriate jobs for everyone's individual abilities and skills is impossible.
It is often suggested that people who are unemployed under this scheme could work as
carers for the elderly
, while having no regard for the fact that this job requires a particular aptitude and body of knowledge.
Assisting people with the job search and helping them identify their skills is very necessary and time consuming.
A jobs guarantee means ensuring that everyone has a job- this includes
violent individuals and criminals
. It may not be appropriate to employ these people.
"On -the- job" training
has been shown to be an effective way of up-skilling a workforce.
This problem exists in the status quo as well. Many people work in jobs they may not be particularly skilled at. This should not be considered a necessary prerequisite.
Being in the wrong job is not as bad as not having a job at all.
Providing jobs for everyone who is unemployed is not a new idea, similar schemes have been implemented throughout history.
