The UK is a parliamentary democracy, not a direct one. The people elect representatives to carry on the business of government on their behalf.
The referendum's legal status was only
meant to be advisory
The referendum can hardly be ignored, the government may decide not to progress along those advisory lines, but it's been fairly prominently discussed.
There is no suggestion that the referendum should be ignored: it needs to be given full and proper consideration. That doesn't necessarily mean leaving the EU, though.
Pushing through the result of a referendum whose result is considered unsound by a significant percentage of voters has the same effect.
