Is Vigilantism Ever Permissible?

Perspective
Loading Discussion

Vigilantism is against the law of most developed countries.

Pros
Cons
  • Online social vigilantism can result in threatening or insulting behaviour, which may be against

    state's defamation and anti-harassment laws.

  •

    People opt into

a form of social contract with their state
to adhere to the state's law in exchange for protection and services. This would be going directly against that contract.

  •

There is some language in the U.S. Constitution that

specifically supports and recognises the legitimacy of some forms of vigilantism
if the government breaches its promise to protect its citizens.

  •

Vigilantism does not have to act

    outside the law
    .
