Who Should be the Next EU Commission President?
Jan Zahradil (ACRE)
Zahradil has been a member of the EU Parliament for two decades, was a founding member of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) and is President of ACRE. He has therefore
with EU politics.
Zahradil, as a Czech, would represent one of the EU's newer members in the top-echelons of the union. Most other candidates for the EU Commission Presidency are from countries that have been
of the EU.
Zahradil is known for his
convictions; he is not convinced of the European project and thus not the right choice for the post.
Zahridl wants to focus "
the entire force
" (p. 6) on a reassessment of the aquis communitaire. This mean the EU Commission will not be focused on fixing unresolved problems.
Zahridl wants to
by not recruiting more staff as envisioned under the current Commission.
Zahradil's has close ties with ACRE, which he is the President of. The group has numerous members who represent questionable values and has repeatedly suffered from corresponding turmoils in the recent past.
The political base of Zahradil is likely to shrink soon since ACRE will lose its British MEPs due to Brexit. They currently make up
about a third
of the party's parliamentarians.
