Pigs which are not genetically modified are unable to use thermogenesis to protect themselves from the cold. This is because they are one of the few mammals that do not have uncoupling protein 1 gene (UPC1). Scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences used CRISPR to incorporate a mouse UPC1 gene into pig embryos. The genetically modified pigs which were created were better able to regulate their body temperature, and thus had lower mortality rates.
