Should Twitter add an edit button?
Twitter should add an edit button
Practically all forums and social networks allow the editing of posts.
You could clarify your point(s) if you come up with a better articulation after you've published your tweet.
You would be able to edit typos.
People should be allowed to edit their tweets but maybe there should be an "original tweet before edit" button to show if they said something horrible and are just trying to cover their mistake up from media. This should be just for grammar, not complete changes.
Major harmful factual inaccuracies can be more easily corrected with an edit button.
If something doesn't look right when you send the tweet you can fix it without deleting and starting over.
You could go back to older tweets and add extra details to them.
This functionality could dupe people into retweeting stuff they agree with, which is then changed to something offensive afterwards. Thus making them look as if they retweeted something offensive.
A person would be able to later edit and change a tweet to something completely different than the original.
Checking if a tweet was actually posted, or photo shopped, would be impossible.
Conversations can be manipulated at a later date rendering a thread to be potentially harmful.
People would pay less attention to detail when they tweet because they know they can edit tweets later.
Third parties apps and webpages that use the Twitter API rely on tweets never changing. Changing this would thus be infeasible or at the very least entail huge cost.
Not much would be gained as all this would accomplish would be new services that archive all tweets, including all the various edits of them.
People wouldn't know if a popular tweet is really popular because of the content or if it was changed from the original.
Adding tweet editing and versioning would cost Twitter a lot of money and probably entails a complete reengineering of their backend.
All Twitter users are aware of tweets not being editable, changing this, would require reeducating all their users.
Edited posts would not reappear in users' feeds and thus the impact of edits would be miniscule.
