Should churches pay tax?
The characteristic of a social benefit does not in itself provide a rationale for exemption from tax. Any service that people are prepared to pay for provides a social benefit by definition. Religion is unremarkable in this respect.
The local sports club, swimming pool and gymnasium provide social benefit and pay tax.
Social benefit can accrue from tax paying organisations; it could be argued more so, merely because they pay tax.
A dating service provides a social benefit.
Utility companies provide a social benefit, but are taxed accordingly.
