It may be a way to create a European identity.
It will allow the establishment of a truly common European job market in all sectors.
A lot of money will be saved by moving to one common official language.
It will make EU institutions more agile and efficient as there will be no need of translators.
Europe has already a unofficial common language which is English. Eu needs only to push it’s usage in official Eu and National politics and importantly in everyday life of Eu Citizens.

The status quo is sufficient as English, as time goes by, will be used everywhere in Europe. The EU doesn't need to act on this issue.
English is the international language inside and out of EU. However, after Brexit delivery, some countries would prefer to abandon English as a lingua franca in EU affairs and there isn't another strong common language.
It is hard to imagine that all member countries of the EU could agree on and accept a shared language.
This might provoke a nationalist backlash aimed at protecting the various European languages, including their history, poetry and literature.
