Should the European Union intervene in the political conflict in Catalonia?
The far right is taking advantage of the EU's inactivity to gain legitimacy and credibility.
The key is to determine whether it would be legal, fair and ethical for the EU to intervene, not whether doing it would benefit or undermine the far right, which would probably criticise the EU whichever stance it took.
More right wing support cannot is not a bad thing per se. Some people prefer far right and they see that as beneficial. If anything, this proves the opposite as EU members can also be more to the right than to the left and still be legitimate, credible and EU members.
This is not only an argument made by the far right. The lack of democratic legitimacy of the EU as a notion has support from across the political spectrum
The far right has a valid point in questioning the undemocratic nature of the EU and offering a viable alternative.
The far right has ulterior motives in supporting the independence movement: they support anything that is seen as weakening the EU. They would have criticized the EU either way.
