Is a free press necessary for democracy?
The freedom to say and write anything true is a fundamental value of democracies.
Government by the people requires an electorate that is familiar with the issues and the evidence for the positions and policies behind them, if it is to be truly democratic in the broader sense.
Many kinds of speech are harmful to society, including hatred, bigotry and libel.
Freedom of expression is not an inherent value of democracies. A democracy is a mechanism for governance, not a value system.
