The suffering of food animals can more easily be mitigated by good living conditions and humane slaughter methods. Severe suffering (either physically or psychologically) can often not be avoided in animal testing. For example, the testing of treatment for diseases often includes giving an otherwise healthy animal the disease. This can be anything from injecting a virus, causing wounds or burns, implanting a tumor, or inducing permanent paralysis by severing the spinal cord.
