Is the UN a force for good?
The UN has not reached its prime. Whilst it may fall short of our hopes, we have more cause for hope with, than without, it.
An institution, once established, can be improved.
The UN is
open and self-critical
of it's shortcomings, and regularly takes steps to improve.
The UN may not be at its best shape to do its job (protect international peace), but it is the only one at the present moment to do the job. The UN needs to be vested with more powers of mediation and peacekeeping forces.
The UN stands for an ideal. While it might not always live up to the ideal (for multiple reasons) it still symbolises that ideal and we are better with than without it.
Although the UN can rightly claim many successes in its history, from a political perspective it has not appeared able to solve the world’s most pressing issues of the last 1-2 decades, suggesting it has indeed passed its prime.
