There can be a happy medium. If churches and religious organizations were required to file and show their expenses then the charitable activities and religious activities would be exempt. Large salaries and distributions to leadership would be subject to taxation. The point is most objections to tax exemptions is when preachers and others are living the grandiose lifestyle with charitable donations.
Prior to the social media revolution, religion, newspapers and radio were the main source of information and assistance. People are now more educated and aware. Religious organisations are under more scrutiny and also less socially relevant. We should have tax concessions for actual bonefied charity work but administration and other expenses should be treated like any other business.
