This division of people (which is ingrained in the United States' society) causes many to vote simply via party lines, rather than where the issues matter. Yes, more options on a ballot might mean smaller vote totals for each candidate, but it would also cause the most optimal candidate for the people to be elected, since it wouldn't be simply voting for one candidate or their competition.
